A Bangladeshi man has been shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) near the border in Cumilla’s Burichang Upazila.

The incident occurred around 8 am on Sunday in Mirpur village, according to Captain AM Jaber bin Jabbar of the BGB (Bangladesh Border Guard).

The deceased, identified as 50-year-old Anowar Hossain, was a resident of Mirpur village. His father is Charu Mian.

BGB and local residents say Hossain was involved in smuggling sugar into Bangladesh from India.

Union Parishad member Abul Kashem said that Hossain was killed by BSF gunfire at the Jamtala border. “I heard that his body is still at the border,” he said.

Captain Jabbar said Hossain was attempting to cross into India illegally when he was shot by BSF members.

The BSF took away Hossain's body, according to BGB officials. A flag meeting between the two border forces has been convened.
